• personality •For the most part, Russell isn’t a bad guy. Okay, so maybe that’s not the truth. His personality tends toward the more sarcastic, cynical and jaded while still managing to charm the pants off almost anyone he meets, usually literally. He's definitely the "love 'em and leave 'em" type, and while he might harbor some fondness for past lovers, actually earning his loyalty is a very hard thing. He’s a sarcastic bastard, sex fiend, way too blunt about certain things, and makes no apologies about it. There is a decent person buried underneath, provided Russell doesn’t toss a couple more shovelfuls of dirt on top of him, but for the most part he doesn’t like the fact that he can be genuinely nice to people and that there are parts of him that care still. He prefers to think he can just use people without getting involved with them emotionally, but that doesn’t stop him from helping someone he cares about for no other reason than the fact that they need him. He justifies it to himself later, reburying the 'decent man' that tries to surface and adding on a few more inches of dirt just in case.

While he does have a nice streak, that doesn’t mean that he’s a 'nice man'. Thanks to a lifelong desire to be on top, he doesn’t take losing or getting beaten easily or well. If you managed to beat him at anything he prides himself on, even if it's just a little, he'll make sure it never happens again. Not only won't it happen, he'll make sure to crush you in return, should you dare try to play up on it. Otherwise, he likes to tease and poke fun at other people. It's usually, though not always, goodnatured. After knowing a person for more than a week or two, he is very good at knowing where to draw the line, but if he steps over it, you can safely assume that he did it quite deliberately. And don't expect an apology either, or at least not a genuine one. Admitting he was wrong is not something that comes easily to him. He can do it, but only if it was a really huge screw up and he cares about the person in question a lot. So far the only person to get an actual apology from him that wasn't his mother is Blaine.

• canon history • Russell always wanted to be in the military, and there was never a time in his life where he thought about doing something else. The games he played as a child were always war games, and he routinely beat any children who dared to question his command, especially the older ones. When he got old enough to go to a prestigious military academy, he didn't think twice about enlisting himself. He knew Organizations picked the cream of the crop and he was always at the top no matter what he did... until it came to submitting to authority. When push came to shove, he was steadfast against following orders of those he deemed lesser and inexperienced, whether it be fellow classmates or even instructors. Suffice to say, he found few he respected and trouble followed at his heels. It was only his prowess in his classes and the promise of so much potential that spared him expulsion after many incidents that escalated quickly in scale during his last two years. The final straw that broke the camel's back was his involvement in 'for hire' jobs, which were prohibited without administrative consent. Russell had been doing them for a good year before he was caught, and was summarily dismissed from the academy six months shy of graduating. Since that day he never looked back.
Using the contacts he had gained from his time doing mercenary work, Russell found that he had little trouble supporting himself outside the strictures of the Organizations. He was intelligent, street smart and highly motivated. He wasn't going to be anyone's bitch he decided, he was his own creature, now and always. Luck and wits would see him through the many scrapes he would get into until experience taught him better. He was good, at the top of his game, working in the dark behind the scenes and doing the dirty deeds even the Organizations wanted to keep under wraps. He made good money, and if he made as many enemies as allies, what did that matter? He was alert enough to keep from getting killed, picking up bits of info and contacts as he went until he had quite the network going. It was during this time that he would meet Itsuki Fox, a doctor who never asked or cared where the injuries he needed stitching up came from, and who had provided needed backup more than once. While Russell's natural caution about the man never really led him to think of him as a friend, he was a co-worker, and someone who gave him a much appreciated base for his contacts in the SPAWA territory. Thanks to the older man's occasional advice Russell was able to build a good base for business in the SPAWA sector. Not that he ever acknowledged the help except when it suited him.
Russell would meet Blaine Thorps in his mid-twenties, just as his mercenary work was starting to take off. It was a brief meeting, and while it would have an impact on both men, it wouldn't be felt until years later. It was during an extended stay in SPAWA territory, a few years after their first meeting, that Russell would change. He saw potential in the boy and subtly encouraged his interests in guns and the military, eventually successfully bringing him into the life of a soldier. He would become his unofficial teacher, showing the young man everything he knew of weapons and strategy, subjects that Blaine showed great interest in, an interest which has persisted to the present day.
Russell would rebuff Blaine's first few (bad) attempts at flirting and seduction for several months, but he would eventually take the younger man as a lover when Blaine was seventeen and he twenty-seven. It was still more a teacher-student relationship than one of equals, with Russell as usual taking the lead. It is an attitude that persists even today, and Russell is still very much in the habit of taking command when it comes to their relationship.
Russell was unable to stay still for the most part, though he would return to SPAWA territory, it was only sporadically and for brief visits. At least, until Itsuki called to turn in a favor, one of many Russell knew he was owed.
It was a strange favor, and smacked of foul play, neither of which had ever proved to be something to make Russell even flinch in the past. Then he finds out that the other person involved is Blaine, his sometime student and lover. He almost refuses, but curiousity and a still strong attachment to the boy (who is now very much a man) cause him to accept. And so, ten years after they first went to bed together, he witnesses Itsuki's failed attempt to rebuild Blaine into something he was not. He helps "rehabilitate" Blaine after the incident, unaware of Itsuki's plan to transfer Blaine's feelings from his college friend to Russell and he plays the part of a concerned friend and lover far easily than he would ever want to admit. Close to the end of the whole thing, Blaine tells him everything that's been going on, though Russell had pieced together most of it already. The whole thing leaves a slightly bitter taste in his mouth and he leaves, on "business" as it were, and has not seen Blaine in the intervening months, indeed it will be another year before he sees the other man again.

• verde history •Russell grew up in Verde and as far as he knows has never left except for a short, recent stint. He had a normal enough childhood and ended up apprenticed to one of the hunters who taught him everything he knew about the woods and the animals in them. The man was a talented hunter, one of the best, and he taught Blaine everything he knew about hunting. He was also abusive and under the guise of 'teaching' him he would repeatedly sexually abuse the young apprentice over a period of several years, always emphasizing that once the boy was able to get him to stop, then he wouldn't be the bitch and he'd really be a man. That 'real men' didn't have to take it unless someone better than them fucked them. Russell absorbed all the information like a sponge and when his mentor died in a hunting accident right before his seventeenth birthday, it was no accident at all. He had finally gotten the man to stop in the most definitive way possible. He would take his mentor's place as one of the best hunters in the village, and equally determined never to be topped.
The next ten years or so would pass pretty uneventfully, until Russell happened to spot the young Blaine Thorps. The kid was one of the Apprentice Hunters and had just lost his mentor in a pretty nasty accident. Seeing the kid continue on with his daily routine despite having no one to guide him piqued his interest. With no one really willing to take him in, considering him damaged goods, Russell decided to take him under his wing. He didn't have an apprentice, and he loved a challenge. Things started out as a pretty standard mentor-student relationship, but as Blaine got older things changed. The boy grew up healthy and robust, the damage from seeing his previous master being ripped to shreds seemingly non-existent. However, as Blaine got older things changed with the two eventually becoming lovers though they often treat each other like a pair of antagonistic brothers more than anything else. With Russell’s hand guiding Blaine both out in the forest and in the bedroom, the boy's personality changed some, becoming more like his mentor’s. There’s no question that Russell noticed the changes, but he made no move to reverse them, or even call Blaine’s attention to them.
Eventually Russell would decide that Blaine was ready to be a hunter on his own (as much as he liked having the kid under him [heh heh heh]) and other than the occasional partner (though Blaine was more than just occasional) he was pretty much solo again. The two hunters kept up with each other and stayed lovers, though their relationship was still very antagonistic. One night Blaine was caught out after night and hurt by the monsters in an event scarily similar to the loss of his mentor all those years ago. But he survived and made it back to Russell's house. Russell would take care of him, stitch up his wounds and help him through the nightmares and panic attacks that followed the attack.
That was 2 years ago. One year ago Russell left. No warning, all anyone got was a letter on his door detailing which of the hunters were to take care of his hunting dogs. Blaine got a note made up of five words, "Don't do anything stupid kid." Where he has been for the last year no one knows, least of all Russell, and if he remembers anything he isn't very open to talking about it.

• sexual orientation • Bi-sexual with a definite preference for females. Russell is an Equal Opportunity Predator. Oh and he doesn’t bottom. Ever. If you somehow manage to get your cock in his ass, expect to get what you’ve been given and more besides.

• sample post • It was just another night at the bar for Russell. There was someone caterwauling away in the corner and while he wasn't bad, he wasn't really good enough (or good looking enough) to merit more than a moment's glance. But the beer was cold and there was a decent crowd so Russell didn't mind too much as he scanned over the crowd that had come to the bar that afternoon. To someone who knew animal behavior it looked very similar to a wolf looking over a herd of sheep, picking out the best one to eat first. At first he was disappointed, there were some of his old lays there, but he wasn't looking for one he'd already had. He wanted fresh meat today. He spotted Blaine across the bar and nodded at him. He might have gone after the blonde, he was always a good fuck, and nevermind that the other man was already in the middle of seducing some redhead, but he didn't feel like it tonight.
And then he saw her. He grinned, almost licking his lips at the sight. A tight skirt covering just enough of long legs and a shirt that showed off her assets without being so low she looked easy. Coal black hair cascaded over her shoulders in lazy curls that framed a pretty face with full lips and big green eyes. She already had a small group of admirers bunched around her, eager to buy her drinks and get her attention, but Russell was happy to see that none of them was getting any more attention than the others. That suited him just fine, she was going to be his prey tonight, not those boys who were more talk than action.
He moved through the crowd with an ease belied by his larger frame. People expected power of Russell, they never really expected the agility that got him out of (and into) more situations than he had kept track of over the years.
Another step and he was at the woman's side, one hand lightly brushing her arm to get her attention as he slid himself between her and the first of her admirers with an easy smile that caught the eye and had been enough to send no few women (and some men) into his bed over the years. A few well placed words, a compliment and another smile, this one with just a hint of the wolf in it, and he had effectively separated his prey from the rest of the herd. And if she wasn't hanging on his every word, she was on his arm, and taking his offer of a drink in a quiet corner. Besides, the private corner would allow him to pay the sort of attention to her that was harder in the middle of the bar, and then later he would see if she sang as sweetly in his bed as she would look in it.
